Home Generators
When the power goes out here it is usually the worst possible week for it — an ice storm in January, or a line down in a July thunderstorm with the well pump and the sump pump both dead. A standby generator starts on its own, transfers the house over in about half a minute, and runs until the utility comes back. You do not have to be home for it to work.

The honest answer depends on three things: whether you heat with LP, natural gas or electric; whether you have a well; and whether you want the whole house or only the circuits that matter.
